Abstract
We propose a STVC (Secure Traffic-light to Vehicle Communication) for wireless communication between the traffic-light and vehicles. As the traffic-light periodically broadcasts its scheduling information over the wireless medium to the vehicles, the driver takes advantage of cooperative intersection collision avoidance, echo-driving and idle-stop services. In this work, we performed an idle-stop service that a vehicle stops and restarts the engine automatically for the traffic signals so that it saves fuel consumption and has effect on reducing CO2 gas with the help of the STVC. To the best of our knowledge, the STVC is the first attempt to be practically applicable in a large-scale complex real-road network, located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Korea. In this paper, we tackle the several obstacles such as LOS (Line of Sight) problem, security, and radio frequency interference, which the STVC faces in real-road network, and provide the practical solution. © 2012 IEEE.
