Abstract
In this paper we propose a dynamic bandwidth control method to efficiently provide quality-of-service (QoS) on Ethernet local area networks (LANs). The proposed method identifies the active flows and controls their incoming traffic by the limited bandwidth dynamically assigned to each. The limited bandwidths are repeatedly recomputed according to variations in traffic size on active flows, a method that discards traffic not solely on special flows but rather on every active flow when the network is congested. As a result, the proposed method can provide QoS efficiently. Moreover, the proposed method overcomes the drawbacks of previous bandwidth control methods, such as QoS provisioning performance being affected by the network topology configuration, and the inability to provide strict fairness when a network is congested. NS2 simulation results show that the proposed method provides more efficient QoS provisioning than previous bandwidth control methods. © 2013 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
