Abstract
The absence of a global clock signal in an asynchronous circuitry can be a good effect on EMI emission. Moreover, a synchronous circuitry cannot guarantee the functionality at lower operating voltage than nominal supply voltage because circuits to generate the global clock signal is vulnerable to lower voltage. To evaluate such characteristics of low-voltage operations and EMI emission in asynchronous circuits, we implemented synchronous and asynchronous MIPS processor cores on FPGA and measured EMI emission and performance of both versions. The experimental results show that EMI emission of the asynchronous MIPS is lower than the synchronous one in overall tested frequencies. It is also observed in the lower operating voltage experiment that the asynchronous MIPS is superior to the synchronous counterpart.
