Abstract
In-Vehicle Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR-HUD) is a system that provides drivers with safety information in the form of driver's view-dependent AR in a see-through display apparatus. The typical design of the system includes front view cameras, a night vision, eye trackers, a navigation module with GPS and a see-through display. The vision sensors acquire the on-road safety information such as front cars, road hazard, and pedestrians. And the navigation module provides routes, road facility information, and point of interests. With the tracked driver's eye positions, the AR information is registered to the driver's viewpoint in the display. We investigated the AR registration in the in-vehicle see-through display in the geometric perspective. Two approaches are studied and compared; namely approximate and rigorous methods. We analyzed the potential error sources creating registration errors and showed that cm-level error control is required for quality AR registration based on simulations. In addition, the design and experimental implementation of our AR-HUD system is briefly introduced in the end.
