Abstract
In the simulation of a flying golf ball, the calculation of the drag and lift forces is very important. The accuracy of the simulation differs depending on the drag and lift coefficients used. For a realistic simulation of a golf ball flight, this paper describes a method for optimizing the drag and lift coefficients based on the real flight data of a real golf ball. We obtained the data using a high-speed stereo camera and a radar device, and then used the data as the initial values for the simulation. To minimized errors between the flying distance obtained by the simulation and the flying distance of a real golf ball, we scale the coefficients and produce new coefficient functions by applying the least square data fitting. By repeating this process, a model of coefficients optimized to the real data is able to be obtained. Thus, if the tuned coefficient model is applied, simulation errors can be minimized.
