Abstract
In this paper, we present the wideband common-mode noise suppression using a vertical stepped impedance electromagnetic bandgap (VSI-EBG) structure for high-speed differential signals in a multi-layer PCB. The dispersion equations for the bandgap prediction are extracted using the equivalent circuit model. Based on the equations, it is thoroughly examined the effects of the impedance ratio, the EBG patch length, via inductances on the stopband bandwidth. The results of the proposed equations show a good agreement with the fullwave simulation results. It is experimentally verified that the proposed VSI-EBG structure suppresses the CM noise over the wideband frequency range without degrading the differential characteristics.
