Abstract
In this paper, we propose and present the implementation result of high-resolution sonar using multi-beam array processing. Single-beam side scan sonar is widely used to survey the seabed and generate precise underwater images. A multi-beam side scan sonar system is proposed to increase the along-track resolution in spite of a high towing speed. To process massive amounts of signal data of multi-beam side scan sonar, an effective signal processing algorithm based on the quadrature method was developed that can minimize the complicated calculations by selecting the optimum sampling interval. Through a sea trial, the efficiency and performance of the developed multi-beam processing algorithm is verified. The results of the sea trial show that the efficiency of the survey is at least twice faster than single beam side scan sonar without a decrease in the along-track resolution.
