Abstract
The Controller Area Network (CAN) is a widely used intra-vehicle communication method for today's vehicles. Nevertheless, despite their simple design and flexibility in interconnecting various automotive components, the cost and weight of accommodating CAN buses increase with the number of devices sharing the bus. In this work, we find that this overhead can be reduced by using wireless technologies for less safety-critical applications. Specifically, we present a prototype wireless platform designed with the target of bridging remote CAN buses to replace the wired connections of today. We empirically evaluate the performance of our prototype installed on a mid-sized vehicle and show that the packet reception and latency performances are suitable for enabling interesting intra-vehicular applications.
