Repetitive Delivery Format of Stereoscopic views for High-Quality 3DTV Service

- Abstract
- In recent years, many broadcasting standardization organizations such as ATSC, DVB, TTA etc., have been working on standardization of 3D broadcasting service. Also, the commercial services of frame- and service-compatible 3DTV have already been launched in the market. However, these specifications based on frame- and service-compatible types have the limitations in quality and caused critical adaptation in legacy DTV such as codec change. This paper introduces a novel repetitive delivery format for left- and right-views that provides full backward compatibility to a legacy DTV system while retaining HD 3D visual quality without additional bandwidth or a codec over the legacy broadcasting channel. Experiments have shown that the proposed method can be effectively applied for a service-compatible 3DTV service without degrading the DTV quality using only legacy DTV platforms.
