Abstract
Over the last few years, sensational improvements in the smart device ecosystem and a gradual evolution in wireless sensing systems have converged into the Internet of Things (IoT), which enables interconnection between various devices and provides intelligent services over the Internet. In the current IoT technology, a number of mobile smart devices have become attractive candidates as local mobile gateways or data consumers providing the capability to monitor the physical phenomena from IoT devices in various ways. In addition, both IoT and smart devices can lead to newly connected personalized services enabling users to collect and process locally connected sensing information to improve the quality of numerous applications. While the current IoT ecosystems make it feasible to form various services, in this work, we outline an essential technical challenge to practically enable personalized services. In this paper, we propose an efficient way to transfer and reprogram the binaries and meta information of IoT devices, which is called ThumbUp, a software framework and hardware architecture for supporting updates of IoT devices. This method, when adapted in a smart devices locally interconnected through various communication medium with devices, can be used as a practical updater for IoT.
