Abstract
The zone based service means that it is dependent with zone. Thus, the zone awareness is essential technology in the zone based service. To aware the zone, the distance between devices should be estimated easily and accurately. The received signal strength indication (RSSI) of Bluetooth can be used to estimate the distance easily. However, estimating the distance using a Bluetooth RSSI is known to be difficult due to inaccuracies. To look into the inaccuracy of the Bluetooth RSSI, first of all, test on the relationship between distance and a Bluetooth RSSI is described. Through the results of this test, we realized that the zone could not be classified due to the inaccuracy of Bluetooth RSSI. Therefore, we propose the zone awareness algorithm to reduce deviations in an RSSI significantly. To evaluate the effectiveness of the zone awareness algorithm, the distance estimation is compared between the low pass filtering and zone awareness algorithms under an electromagnetic compatibility chamber environment and an indoor hall environment. In addition, we implemented and tested the wireless body area network (WBAN) zone awareness in an office environment. The zone awareness algorithm shows the better results than the low pass filter.
