자율주행차(Autonomous Vehicle, Self-Driving Car)는 운전자가 직접 조작하지 않아도 자동차 스스로 주행환경을 인식하여 목표지점까지 운행할 수 있는 무인자동차이다. 센서가 주변환경을 인식하여 주행경로를 결정하며 자체 동력을 이용하여 독립적으로 주행한다. 최근 들어 벤츠, BMW, 아우디, GM, 도요타 등 자동차업체 외에도 구글, 애플, 소니, 우버 등 IT업체도 자율주행차를 개발하고 있다. IT업체들이 자율주행차를 개발하는 이유는 자동차와는 달리 하드웨어 보다 소프트웨어, 지도 등이 더 중요하고, 자동차 제조보다는 택배, 렌터카, 공유 서비스 등의 신사업 비즈니스 모델로 새로운 성장동력을 발굴할 수 있기 때문이다.
