Abstract
A method for the calculation of Rayleigh scattering noise in the fibre Raman amplifiers was proposed. It was found that the optimal Raman pump power was lower when the Rayleigh scattering of both signal and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was considered in comparison to the condition when only Rayleigh scattering of ASE was considered. The analysis showed that there was reasonable agreement between the results and the constant gain approximation.
