In this paper, we propose an efficient method tobroadcast digital television signals using single frequencynetworks (SFNs) within the Advanced Television SystemsCommittee (ATSC) transmission systems. In implementingthe SFNs of an 8-vestigial side band (8-VSB) DigitalTelevision (DTV) system, the ambiguity problem of thetrellis coder is unavoidable in a conventional ATSCtransmission system. We propose a memory initializationof the trellis coder to resolve this ambiguity problem. Sincethe proposed scheme to synchronize multiple transmittersminimizes the changes from the conventional ATSC system,the hardware complexity for these changes is very low. Oursimulation results show that the proposed scheme makes aless than 0.1 dB degradation at the threshold of visibilitywith a bit error rate of 3×10-6 in the additive whiteGaussian noise (AWGN) channel. It is possible to reducethe performance degradation by increasing theinitialization period of the proposed scheme.
