무선 ad-hoc 네트워크에서 각 링크는 기존의 IEEE802.11(이하 802.11) hotspot 과 같이, 단거리 영역에 걸쳐 분포하는 링크상에서 지연을 최소화 하면서 매우 높은 데이터 전송률을 반드시 지원해야 한다. 이를 위해서, 현재의 802.11 규격은 처음 설계시에 고려되지 않았던 무선 ad-hoc 네트워크 환경의 multihop 연결성, 높은 이동성, 다양한 QoS를 요구하는 이질적인 서비스를 수용하기 위해 변경이 요구된다. 본 고에서는 무선 ad-hoc 네트워크와 관련된 802.11 PHY/MAC 계층의 특성을 기술하고, 802.11을 기반으로 하는 다중 접근 프로토콜들의 현재 상태를 살펴보고, 진행 중인 연구 과제들을 소개한다. 802.11은 IEEE가 승인한 무선랜 국제 표준으로[1], MAC과 물리 계층(PHY)의 상세규격을 제공한다. 802.11 프로토콜에서 매체 접근을 위한 기본적인 메커니즘은 Distributed Coordination Function(DCF)으로, 이것은 CSMA/CA를 기반으로 하여 같은 클러스터(basic service set 이라고 함)에 있는 모든 디바이스들이 무작위로 접근하는 개념이다. 또한, 무선 트랜시버는 송신과 수신을 동시에 할 수 없어서 충돌 감지가 실행 불가능하기 때문에 사전 충돌 회피가 적용되었다.
