RFID 응용들은 태그 메모리상의 IDㆍ정보와 무선주파수 인터페이스를 적용하는 대상과 활용하는 방법 그리고 주어진 환경에 따라 RFID 시스템의 다양한 응용들이 개발되어 상용화되고 있다. 한편, RFID 태그의 적용개념과 응용들은 변화를 거듭하고 있으며, 상용화 과정에서 다양한 응용이 발굴될 것이다. 따라서 RFID의 적용개념과 응용 분류가 계속 보완되고 개선되기 위해서는 RFID 태그에 대한 응용과 분류에 대한 변화와 확장에 대한 상황들을 보다 유연하게 받아 들일 필요가 있다. RFID 시스템은 기본적으로 태그ㆍ카드와 리더, 호스트 컴퓨터(혹은 응용)로 구성된다. 태그는 무선주파수(Radio Frequency: RF) 기능과 메모리, 안테나(혹은 전원)로 구성되며, 태그의 메모리상의 IDㆍ정보를 무선주파수를 사용하여 인터페이스한다. 태그 메모리상의 IDㆍ정보와 무선주파수 인터페이스를 적용하는 대상과 활용하는 방법, 그리고 주어진 환경에 따라 RFID 시스템의 다양한 응용들이 개발되어 상용화되고 있다. FID 태그와 카드를 이용하는 응용들의 개념과 사례 그리고 분류에 대하여 다음과 같이 살펴본다.
