Abstract
Interconnection is defined in different ways in each policy regime, but it can be briefly defined as the connection or linkage between different telecommunications networks. Interconnection appeared with competition in the telecom market. Because incumbents have no incentive voluntarily to provide it to new entrants, the regulator should intervene in the process of negotiation among telecom providers. However, there remains a difficult theoretical and practical problem for policymakers. The FCC, the regulator in the US, is trying to replace the existing inter-carrier compensation regimes with a unified approach to amend many problems of the current system. This paper reviews the overview of interconnection, interconnection charging system, and a new interconnection approach in the US. Then, some implications will be derived from this study.
