USB는 사용의 편리성, 넓은 확장성을 목적으로 1993년 인텔, 컴팩, NEC, 마이크로소프트 등 4개 업체가 주축이 되어 기술 개발 협의를 시작하였고, 이후 IBM, DEC, Northern Telecom 등이 추가로 참여하여 총 7개 업체의 공동 연구로 탄생된 기술이다. 이러한 USB는 1996년 USB 1.0 규격을 발표한 이후 2000년 USB 2.0 규격이 발표되기까지 기술이 빠르게 진화하면서 PC 역사상 가장 성공적인 접속 장치로 자리 매김하고 있다. 이와 같은 USB의 발전에 힘입어 유선의 속도와 보안성에 무선의 편리함을 추가한 무선 USB 1.0 규격의 표준화가 최근 완료되었다. 본 고는 유선 USB 2.0 규격에 기반하고 무선 매체로서 UWB를 이용하는 무선 USB의 표준화 동향에 대하여 소개하고, 무선 USB 기술의 특징 및 국내외 연구 동향에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다.
