본 고에서는 서장 우편물의 자동화 시스템의 성능을 향상시키기 위하여 USPS가 기울인 노력에 대하여 기술하였다. 미국은 1980년대 후반 전체 우편 물량의 70%를 차지하고 있는 서장 우편물에 대한 자동화 처리를 가장 먼저 시도하였다. 이렇게 시작된 자동화 처리 체계가 1990년대 후반에 완성되었으며, 현재까지 하드웨어와 소프트웨어 업데이트를 통하여 자동 처리율을 꾸준히 향상시키고 있다. 본 고에서는 미국의 서장 우편물 자동처리 과정 및 주요 자동처리 기계 및 현황에 대하여 알아보았으며 더불어 서장 우편물의 자동 처리 성능의 연도별 변화 추이 및 여러 인식 성능 향상 프로그램들에 대하여 알아보았다. 이러한 꾸준한 노력 결과 USPS의 인식 시스템의 성능이1997년 약 20%대에서 2004년 94% 이상으로 향상되었으며 자동화 처리율은 2000년 약 86% 정도에서 2004년 약 94% 정도로 향상되었다.
