Abstract
Based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network (LR WPAN), this paper proposes a frame size adaptive Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. Mean Burst length and mean Gap between bursts are measured by using training frames between two communication de-vices. With the mean Burst and Gap values, an optimal MAC frame size to meet the required FER is calculated. During communication period, FER is periodi-cally measured in a transmitting device. If the measured FER is lower than the required FER, MAC frame size is increased, else vice versa. Thus, channel resources can be more effectively utilized by sending optimal bits into one trans-mission frame. The proposed scheme is evaluated under various wireless chan-nel conditions in terms of the achieved throughput. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a much higher throughput than a non-frame size adaptive MAC protocol in LR WPAN does. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
