Abstract
For seamless streaming of multimedia contents that ensures Quality of Service (QoS) over heterogeneous networks, it is very important to adapt multimedia with respect to usage environments such as terminal capabilities, network characteristics, and user characteristics. Currently, standardization activity of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) that supports scalability in spatial/temporal/quality domain and real-time bitstream adaptation (called as extraction in SVC) is in process. In this paper, we propose a dynamic adaptation scheme of SVC using the MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA) that can provide optimal adaptation. The MPEG21 DIA framework provides systematic solutions in choosing an optimal adaptation operation to given constraints and supports inter-operability of the adaptation. In a framework for adaptation, delivery, and consumption of SVC, the proposed scheme was simulated under timevarying conditions of network condition, terminal capability, and user preference. In addition, experiments for the dynamic adaptation of SVC were performed when a session is moved from one type of device to another type of device. The experimental results showed robustness and efficiency in the dynamic adaptation of SVC.
