Abstract
Active RFID system can be used to electrically lock and unlock a freight container. ISO TC104/SC4/WG2 gave a name of eSeal (Electronic Seal) to the active RFID device and is currently standardizing ISO 18185 documents for eSeal technology. This paper introduces the present status of eSeal standardization and some security threats, and proposes a lightweight security protocol of which name is ePP (eSeal Protection Protocol) to overcome these threats. The proposed ePP can provide security services such as data confidentiality, data integrity and abnormal message detection through comparatively lightweight 2-way handshake. In addition, the ePP does not cause hardware modification or cost increasing because it can be implemented in software. These features make the ePP much suitable for the eSeal and its associated reader.
