Abstract
In Korea, motorcycle accidents constitute about 5% of total traffic accidents, however, the fatality rate approximates 12%, which is disproportionately higher per mile driven compared to other vehicular fatalities. Most of these fatalities are related to the delivery service industry, mainly mail or package delivery. This paper describes the development of a system designed to improve postal motorcyclists' safety via monitoring their driving behavior: the Postal-motorcycle Driver Monitoring System (PDMS). Using a GPS, the PDMS tracks movement of the postal motorcycle in real time and measures driving patterns-acceleration, deceleration, average speed, maximum speed, and braking-which may clarify the causes of motorcycle accidents. Via a test-bed, we have identified issues requiring improvement which form the basis of future research.
