Abstract
In order to overcome the drawbacks and combine the advantages of both 3G packet-switched mobile communication systems and WLAN, wireless broadband Internet (WiBro) system based on 2.3GHz bandwidth and IEEE 802.16e developed in Korea. Recently, the new version of WiBro system, named WiBro-evolution (WiBro-EVO) system which provides higher performance and various multimedia services, is being developed. In this paper, we propose the efficient authentication architecture for twice network entry procedures based on the frequency overlay in WiBro-EVO system. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme to consider how it reduces the signaling messages overhead in the WiBro-EVO system. The proposed scheme can reduce signaling overhead over the wireless and fixed links. It is also easy to manage authentication keys. Therefore, it can be used as a guideline for developing WiBro-EVO system based on frequency overlay. ©2008 IEEE.
