Abstract
In this paper, an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) service based on wireless sensor networks is proposed and methods to effectively deploy the service are discussed. AMI allows customers to control their own energy usage by enabling visibility of real-time energy consumption information and minimizing expenses for energy consumption. In addition, AMI allows utilities to reduce the production cost maintenance cost or the need for new power plant by the decreased peak demand due to demand response and load control. In this paper, focusing on the Korean electricity market, this paper presents the current market status and opportunity, service offering method and value propositions of AMI system. A business value analysis is also presented to show the benefits from deploying this system in Korea. Finally, strategic actions are recommended.
