Abstract
In this paper, a compact antenna design is proposed based on the 2-D interdigital composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH TL), with the design principle illustrated through a dispersion diagram. An interdigital capacitor is used to enhance series capacitance, thereby lowering the resonant frequency without changing the physical size. The proposed concept is validated using a 3 x 3 interdigital CRLH TL, demonstrating resonant frequencies of 3.028 GHz and 2.724 GHz for n = -1 and n = -2 modes, respectively. The realized antenna measures 13.5 mm by 13.5 mm, which corresponds to 0.16λg x 0.16λg at n = -2 mode. This results in a 90% reduction in size compared to a conventional patch antenna, attributed to the 2-D interdigital CRLH TL.
