Abstract
Satellite ground control systems for both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites have been developed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) for the past 15 years. Major Korean satellite programs such as LEO KOMPSAT series satellites and GEO COMS satellite have been using ETRI developed satellite control systems. The Mission Control Element (MCE) for the KOMPSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-2 has been successfully operated by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) which is the satellite developer and owner. COMS Satellite Ground Control System (SGCS) has been developed by ETRI and installed in KARI for technical and operational qualification. The MCEs for the KOMPSAT-5 and KOMPSAT-3 are in the system implementation phases. In this paper, characteristics of the satellite control systems for the LEO and GEO satellites have been investigated based on the KOMPSAT series MCEs and COMS SGCS developments. Various subsystems in the MCE and SGCS are described in the functional and operational senses.
