FTN(Faster-than-Nyquist) 전송기술은 1975년 최초 제안된[1] 이래 한 세대가 지난 최근에야 재조명되기 시작했다. 구현복잡도가 높다는 단점에도 불구하고 FTN 기술이 주목을 받고 있는 것은 그만큼 주파수 자원의 부족 문제가 심각해졌음을 의미한다. 특히, 최근 논의되고 있는 지상파 UHD(Ultra High Definition)TV 방송과 디지털라디오 방송 등 차세대 방송으로의 진화를 위한 주파수 추가 확보의 어려움을 해소하기 위한 전송효율 고도화 기술의 중요성이 어느 때보다 높아지고 있다. 본고에서는 방송 전송 시스템 분야에서 FTN 기술의 연구개발 및 표준화 동향을 소개하고, 차세대 방송 시스템에 적용하기 위한 추가적인 기술개발과 경쟁력 확보가 필요한 분야에 대해 살펴봄으로써 차세대 방송 표준이 나아갈 방향을 예측하는 데 참고가 될 정보를 제공하고자 한다.
