Abstract
Persistent scheduling is adopted in Mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) as a VoIP optimization. Unfortunately, under persistent scheduling, resource is fragmented as allocations and deallocations occur repeatedly. The undesirable resource fragmentation can be avoided by enabling resource shifting. However, such benefit of resource shifting is achieved at the expense of not only increased MAP overhead but also destructive effect on the existing allocations in case of MAP loss. In this paper, we propose opportunistic resource shifting in the sense that the resource shifting takes place only when a new allocation request fails not due to insufficient resource but just because of the resource fragmentation. The rationale behind the proposed scheme is to minimize the number of MAP transmissions with resource shifting command which may have the destructive effect in case of MAP loss. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by computer simulation.
