데이터 트래픽의 폭발적인 증가에 대응하기 위해 5G 이동통신에서는 주어진 주파수 대역 내에서 최대한 많은 정보를 전송할 수 있는 주파수 사용 효율 극대화를 목표로 한다. 이러한 목표를 달성하기 위한 방법 중 하나로 심볼 간 직교성을 만족시킬 수 있는 속도인 나이퀴스트율보다 더 빠르게 정보 심볼을 전송하는 FTN(Faster-Than-Nyquist) 전송기법이 대두되고 있다. FTN 전송기법에 따르면 나이퀴스트율 이상의 심볼 전송속도에 의해 생기는 ISI(Inter-Symbol Interference)를 효율적으로 극복하는 코딩 및 등화 방법에 의해 채널 용량을 증가시킬 수 있다. 본고에서는 FTN 전송기법의 기본 원리 및 전송이득을 소개하고, 현재 진행되고 있는 FTN 전송기술 동향을 살펴보고자 한다.
