초록
Although there are still debates on the use of millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies for 5G mobile communication networks, there is growing consensus that the utilization of mmWave is necessary for the 5G data traffic big-bang generation. To provide the foundation of 5G system planning and evaluation, this paper discusses mmWave propagation characteristics for mobile application environments. We first survey the literature on mmWave propagation characteristics such as path loss and delay spread that are applicable for outdoor and indoor 5G networks including global efforts towards channel standardization. Then we present our 28 GHz measurement results collected in urban outdoor and large indoor environments. By using narrow-beamwidth horn antennas, we are able to characterize propagation characteristics of path loss and delay spread not only with respect to distance but also with respect to angle direction.
