Abstract
This paper proposes network interworking mechanism for reducing standby power that set-top boxes consume in standby state where the set-top boxes do not receive contents services. The network interworking mechanism operates based on interactions between the set-top boxes and a mode-control server that can control operation modes of set-top boxes. In standby state, the set-top boxes operate in some low-power mode that activates network interfaces. Whenever the set-top boxes need to be updated in standby state, the mode-control server orders the set-top boxes to activate modules for their updates via signaling between the mode-control server and set-top boxes, and then the set-top boxes can update their software, firmware, etc. The network interworking mechanism will be a representative power saving mechanism for smart home that allows all home appliances to connect to internet.
