Abstract
The ITU has presented outlines for 5G networks. Enhanced mobile broadband of up to 20 Gbps is one of key use cases and expected to be serviced in millimeter wave frequency bands. This extremely high data rate gives rise to new technical challenges in designing layer 2/3 protocol stack software. In this paper issues related to efficient data processing, large bandwidth handling and data parallelism, ultra-low latency and layer 1 interface, and fast handover are addressed. Then we propose reference design principles for layer 2/3 protocol stack software. The design principles include: Enhanced descriptor based zero copy mechanisms using hardware assisted IPC and jumbo frame are proposed for efficient data processing. And multicore based cross carrier supporting mechanisms are adopted to deal with large bandwidth handling and data parallelism problems. In addition a Transmission Time Interval (TTI) of 200 us and high speed layer 1 interface are specified to meet ultra-low latency. Furthermore, UE controlled handover mechanisms are proposed to adjust to rapidly changing frequencies. In the evaluations we develop pre-5G UE prototypes and testbeds. And system level testing results show that our designs provide high data rates up to 1.5 Gbps.
