Abstract
In this paper, we propose a flow table management scheme of an OpenFlow protocol which minimizes table-misses in the flow table. When the table-miss occurs, an OpenFlow switch should perform further interactions with an OpenFlow controller to obtain flow entries, but it results in extra processing time and communication overhead. Here we tackle the main reason which causes the table-miss is that the switch deletes expired flow entries regardless of its vacancy of the flow table. While previous studies have used sophisticated training sets or large changes to solve this problem, we propose a simple flow table management scheme using an LRU-based caching algorithm to keep the flow entries in the switch as many as possible. With an evaluation of the proposed scheme on experiments, we have identified performance enhancement in terms of the number of table-missed packets.
