Abstract
The delivery of end-to-end services often requires various service functions. These include traditional network service functions such as firewalls and traditional IP Network Address Translators (NATs), as well as application-specific functions. The service function chaining determines the requite service functions (SFs), based on context information and selects a proper service function chain that consists of the requite SFs providing specific treatment of packets. The service function path is an ordered list of service function instances within a specific service function chain. This paper describes the requirements and the deployment models of service function chaining in terms of service function chain and service function path.
