Abstract
This paper proposes using a common preamble among DSRC and Wi-Fi devices for harmonious coexistence. Using a common preamble can significantly improve the sensing range of DSRC devices. The performance of the coexistence between Wi-Fi and DSRC has been evaluated through the simulations performed using the event-driven simulator. Simulation results show that using common preamble can reduce delay and significantly improve the delivery ratio of safety messages by extending the sensing range of DSRC devices. With only marginal 2.1% of Wi-Fi throughput reduction, the safety messages delivery ratio increased by 42%.
