Abstract
Database researchers have viewed a sensor network as a virtual database system and have proposed various energy-efficient query processors. Recently, they have been interested in the spatial query processor which acquires sensor readings from sensor nodes inside specified geographical area of interests. A basic approach in the spatial query processing is to perform a query at a server after acquiring all sensor readings. Though simple, but it incurs high wireless transmission cost in accessing all sensor nodes. Therefore, various spatial query processing approaches have been proposed, which have focused on reducing the wireless transmission cost. However, the existing approaches did not consider heterogeneous sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a distributed spatial query processor for heterogeneous sensor networks. The proposed system can perform various kinds of queries, control running queries, support logical sensor networks, and solve heterogeneity problem of sensor networks. Through the implementation of a prototype system, we finally show the distributed spatial query processor is applicable for a real sensor network.
