Abstract
Maximum likelihood method of estimating carrier frequency offset (CFO) through comparing phase differences of consecutive repetition patterns are reliable and convenient method. However, large oscillator phase noise hampers adopting this method in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems and terahertz communication systems which are especially vulnerable to phase noise. In this paper, we analyze the cause and the influence of oscillator phase noise which is measured in a mmWave system and propose how this can be overcome. This method requires precise time tracking for each repetition patterns before using them in CFO estimation. This method is inherently adequate for estimating small amount of CFO, but it can effectively cope with large oscillator phase noise of mmWave OFDM communication systems in CFO estimation.
