Abstract
With the advent of the big data era, the capacity of main memory demanded for high performance computing systems is rapidly increasing. However, due to the structural limitation of DDR interfaces, there is a limit to the number of DRAMs equipped in a computing node. To overcome this limitation, the demand for the memory expansion technology is now drastically increasing. In this paper, we examine recent memory expansion technology from the perspective of system architecture, interface, and implementation technology. We also compare various implementations of memory expansion technologies from Samsung, HPE, and ETRI with respect to the interface protocols, memory capacities, and memory interfaces.
