Abstract
This paper presents a dynamic range extendable analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for accurate sensors, which consists of a variable gain amplifier (VGA), a sub-ADC and a decoder. The VGA adjusts the input signal to the full scale of the sub-ADC. The decoder maintains that the least significant bit (LSB) of the proposed ADC represents the same amount of physical quantity. The sub-ADC can be a discrete ADC or an ADC in a microcontroller. Analysis results of noise figure shows that the proposed ADC can extend the dynamic range and improve resolution of the sub-ADC.
