Abstract
There is growing interest in providing 5G cellular communications to non-terrestrial area using non-terrestrial platforms. This requires the integration of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) into terrestrial networks (TN) to leverage economies of scale in cellular networks. The demand for emerging services using non-terrestrial network platforms will be an opportunity for 6G. 6G envisions three-dimensional (3D) spatial networks that provide seamless and high data rate services to terminals anywhere. In this paper, we introduce considerations when designing multi-layered 3D spatial networks over cellular networks. 5G new radio (NR) features such as mmWave and beamforming can be very attractive solutions for the scenario. So, the highly relevant 5G advanced activities in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) are summarized and a system reference model based on them are proposed. Standardization efforts for various technologies in 3GPP are expected to contribute to performance improvement for the 3D spatial network as well. Finally, some technical issues to be studied specific with respect to the network scenario are presented.
