Abstract
The reliability and availability of wireless train communication are extremely important in safe and efficient train control. In this paper, we present an LTE-Railway (LTE-R) communication characteristics and performance based on real-time measuring radio frequency condition in Korea Train eXpress (KTX) train field test. We propose handover optimization method for increasing reliability of LTE-R network. We also introduce redundant railway communication scheme using LTE-R and commercial LTE networks for increasing availability of wireless train control system. Both proposals are analyzed and verified using OPNET network simulation. It has been shown that 17% reduction of handover delay and 13 times reduction of packet loss rate compare to the legacy LTE-R network system.
