Abstract
This paper evaluates the total cost of ownership (TCO) of ring topology-based 5G Ethernet mobile fronthaul, and compares it to active transparent wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system. For this, we estimate the queueing latency at the Ethernet packet switch that consequently determines the required capacity of colored channels. We show that the packet aggregation capability of the Ethernet packet switch enables to significantly reduce the optical transceiver (XCVR) cost by up to 41 %, which eventually realizes the save on TCO compared to conventional active transparent WDM systems.
