Abstract
In this paper, we propose the handover detection scheme for a multi-beam geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite communications. Motivated by that the position information is requisite for mobile terminals, we consider a distributed position-based handover algorithm in which terminals determine need for handover and a list of candidate beams. Firstly, we divide the serving region into two parts depending on whether the handover detection process needs to be carried out, then evaluate an impact of the proposed scheme on handover performance. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme can reduce ping-pong effect compared with the conventional position-based handover schemes.
