Abstract
This paper introduces a novel device that can track hand motion and provide haptic force feedback for VR interactions in real time. The proposed device estimates the 3D positions of hands by using a combination of the position estimation of ultrasonic sensors and the 3D acceleration and pose estimation of inertial sensors. The multichannel ultrasonic sensors in the 2D plane are used to localize the 3D positions of hands at a relatively low speed while a set of inertial sensors on hands are used to accurately estimate the hand positions at a relatively high speed. The proposed device provides haptic force feedback using a set of actuators and overcomes an overheat problem of the actuators by adopting an efficient power control. We present a capability of the proposed device in the VR training application such that a user can practice handling a real fire extinguisher in an immersive environment.
