Abstract
The primary purpose of this paper is to develop an algorithm for determining advisory safety speeds for drivers on SMART Highways. Such advisory safety speeds are based on real-time vehicle data collected from road surface environment sensors and in-vehicle data. The in-vehicle data includes vehicle speed, RPM (revolutions per minute), fuel consumption rate, and so on, collected from OBDII -ECU (Engine Control Unit) equipment. Our advisory safety speed model consists of two parts: The first part is a macro car-following model that is used for considering highway traffic parameters, while the other is a safe stopping distance model for monitoring road-surface data. We used a VISSIM simulation to evaluate the new algorithm. This research can be used in safer applications for highway driving. The suggested advisory safety speed model may directly contribute to providing greater overall safety for vehicle users on SMART Highways.
