Abstract
The 5G mobile core moved away from a monolithic design toward a service based architecture as the network now being composed of small interacting software components so called network functions. The change is to enable horizontal scalability and flexibility in network deployments to meet various vertical use cases of stringent requirements. Going beyond 5G, it is clear that mobile core networks will base on the maturing cloud-native technology with network functions being deployed in multiple distributed clouds. This paper discusses limitations of the current core architecture with a forward looking to its cloud-native realization. In order to completely adopt the cloudnative trend, the architecture should be restructured to enable a clear separation between development and deployment of mobile network services. Following this vein, we make a holistic architectural change to the core by moving some of it parts into an integration fabric layer. We discuss how the fabric is designed and its benefits to the development of the beyond 5G core network.
