Abstract
In this work, we investigate a previously underexplored privacy concern within Zoom Video Conferencing related to its “pinning” feature - where users can pin another participant's video feed to maintain it as their primary view. Despite Zoom's assertions that pinning is a private action, our work reveals that specific network messages related to Zoom's proprietary protocol inadvertently disclose the identities of participants engaging in pinning actions. Through a detailed protocol analysis and the development of a tool named PINTRACE, we demonstrate the ability to detect such actions in real-time with near-perfect accuracy. Our findings prompt further investigation into the privacy implications of user interactions across various video conferencing tools, including but not limited to Zoom.
