Abstract
Railway operation systems are rapidly integrating ICT technology to enhance safety and efficiency. Despite advancements, aging components and sudden shocks can disrupt the physical connections between train coaches. This paper explores a train integrity detection system that integrates Long Term Evolution Railway (LTE-R), Long Range (LoRa) communications and Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor disconnections between train coaches. As measures of system performance criteria, we defined Packet Detection Rate (PDR) of LTE-R and the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of LoRa. Also, the Disconnection Detection Rate (DDR) of the Train Integrity Detection System (TIDS) in open terrain or tunnel environments was experimentally measured at the O-song test site in Korea. The measured PDR and DDR for 10 test runs are better than we expected because of the simplified test conditions of train disconnection. Further performance tests will be conducted in real situations for freight train operation.
