Abstract
This paper presents the potential application of a laser communication terminal (LCT) capable of transmitting real-time large-capacity environmental monitoring data, which is gathered through distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems and smart internet of things (IoT) sensors that can be installed in underground facilities. A DAS system capable of monitoring the environment in underground facilities can sense up to 10,000 points per channel, generating large-capacity of raw data at a rate of 1 giga samples per second (Gs/s) per channel. Furthermore, with the continuous increase in data acquired from smart IoT sensors, there is a demand for communication technology that can transmit large-capacity data at gigabit speeds in real-time to repeaters or control centers. The developed LCT offers a communication speed of 2.5 Gbps at a distance of approximately 700 meters and has been designed and manufactured to be compact and lightweight for easy installation and application in underground facilities.
